Reflections in Blue

When Summer is coming kids love to play with water... In the blue reflection of neon signs. In Piazza Castello a Torino.

In Piazza Castello a Torino.

Memorial Day 2010

Next Monday (May 31) United States will celebrate the Memorial Day. Memorial Day it is the day that America chose to honour and celebrate the sacrifice of those American soldiers deads fighting in any war. Yes, "any war" include who died fighting hijackers or, lately, in Iraq... Someone could think that this doesn't match too much with this photo blog, Torino or Italian culture and traditions. It isn't rue. Americans soldiers died in Italy during World War II for our freedom and we should remember them. So, like every year I do, this is my personal tribute. [I took this photo last January in Miami]

Balcony on Torino

Yes, you can find this Bar with a terrace and a balcony on Torino, at terminus of the trolley (rack) that take people from the city to Superga. Isn't it a wonderful skyline of the city, is it?

When it looks like Summer

In these days it looks like Summer. So, what's better than to drink water when you're thirsty? Where? At Toret, of course. The pronounce is: /'tu:ret/ and it means "little bull". In fact water comes out from a sort of little head bull (as you can see). Bull in italian is Toro and Torino come out from Bull.

In questi giorni sembra estate.

Sindone, l'arrivederci !

2.113.128 people passed in front of the Shroud of Turin (as is called abroad). Yesterday at 4pm the closing ceremony with the Archbishop of Torino Severino Poletto. The Holy Shroud will be keeped in the Cathedral of Torino until next exhibition. The photo shows part of the path for arriving to the Cathedral --- In past days I often thought to go there to take single photo of people but, once there, I realized that to take those kind of photos should have been unfair. In some way I would have put my nose in their personal feeling.

Books, books and books. People need to read, to know, to enjoy, to move, to laugh and many other to-some-verb. Books are part of our life. In Torino, each year, there's the Book Fair. This one is the 23rd Edition, 14,000 exhibitors, 315,000 visitors and of course Italian News ignored it as usual. The culture loses another time. Poor Italy.

Libri, libri e libri.

I have shown many times How Valentino's Castle looks like from the other side (see HERE) but rarely, by night, how it looks seen from the other side of the river Po. It was one of residence of residences of Royal House of Savoy and in 1197 it has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. More on Wikipedia HERE

This is the Italian Flag taken from Palazzo Madama. I showed many time Palazzo Madama (see HERE how it looks outside) I said a lot about it but probably I never said it has been on 1848, the 8th of May that was inaugurate the first Senate called Subalpino.

Ponte Balbis

Ponte Balbis (Balbis' bridge) is the last bridge over the river Po downtown: at South of the city. Since Olympic Games it's lit up all the night changing color from white, red, pink, magenta a and blue. Of course I chose the last one because... Torino is Blue !

I showed many time San Lorenzo's Church realized by Guarino Guarini (inside the unique dome and the lantern HERE and outside HERE) but today I would like you give a look on two details: the two clock -just at basement of the dome-. On left the traditional one, on the right the sundial.
